Ever Witnessed the Sitar in Action? At This Concert, Hear It Played by One of the Best

Beat your Wednesday woes with a unique concert experience at Kauffman Center! Next Wednesday, March 13th, sitar player and composer Anoushka Shankar will perform a selection of world music for Kansas City audiences. Transport your ears to India – no passport required – during this enchanting evening!

Anoushka Shankar is a singular figure in the Indian classical and progressive world music scenes. Deeply rooted in the Indian classical music tradition, Anoushka Shankar began studying sitar at age 9 with her father and guru, the late Ravi Shankar. She made her professional debut at age 13 and earned her first of six Grammy Award nominations by age 20.

As an international solo artist, Anoushka has performed in a range of distinguished venues such as Carnegie Hall, Barbican Centre, Sydney Opera House, Vienna Konzerthaus, Salle Pleyel, Royal Festival Hall, Frankfurt Alte Oper, Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, Palais des Beaux-Arts and the KKL Luzern. Her event appearances include the Verbier Festival, the Prague Spring Festival, Boom Festival and the London Proms.

In her Kauffman Center performance, Anoushka Shankar reflects on her journey so far, drawing on classical ragas, referencing her experiences and experimenting with new ideas in a cross-cultural dialogue that showcases the versatility of the sitar across musical genres. The program features Shankar on sitar, with musicians Ojas Adhiya (tabla), Pirashanna Thevarajah (mridangam), Ravichandra Kulur (flute), Danny Keane (cello and piano), and Kenji Ota (tanpura).

Get whisked away to a faraway land when you hear Anoushka Shankar live at Kauffman Center! Ticket prices begin at $45.50 for lower grand tier seating and extend to $95.50 for Parterre seating. To purchase tickets, visit www.tickets.kauffmancenter.org.
